JCFS offers a full range of mandated adoption services including the placement of children, Home Studies, infertility counselling, Post-Adoption services including birth family histories and counselling, networking with other adoption resources, groups and continuing education. JCFS can assist and support individuals or families dealing with infertility, anyone considering the choice of parenthood through adoption, adult adoptees seeking information supports including liaison with the Province of Manitoba Post-Adoption Registry, and birth parents seeking support before and after surrendering parental rights.

Steps to adoption at JCFS include:
  • Information and Referral – Couples or individuals considering adoption will be given an orientation where they will receive information about the adoption process, as well as different types of adoption options (e.g. domestic, private, international, etc.) and the available adoption resources.
  • Adoption Counselling – Anyone considering adoption may benefit from the counselling of an experienced adoption professional who will guide them towards reaching the decision best suited for them and their family.
  • Home Study – The Home Study, required for all adoptions, includes reference checks, assessment, personal and family history, recommendations and supporting documentation. The social worker conducts interviews with the clients in a sensitive and supportive manner.
  • Post-Placement Supports – Once the adopted child has joined the family, monthly home visits are made by the social worker to assess and facilitate the transition to family life. Following this period, a report consisting of recommendations is prepared for the court to finalize the adoption.
Other Adoption Services:
