JEWISH CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICE ANNOUNCES
THE EVE AND HARRY VICKAR COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Jewish Child and Family Service is pleased to announce the launch of THE EVE AND HARRY VICKAR COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM. This program is designed to support Jewish individuals and families facing significant financial challenges. It has been established with the generous support of the
L. Kerry Vickar Charitable Foundation as a designated gift through the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg. The program is an important addition to the funds available through JCFS. It is designed to make a major difference in the lives of individuals whose daily struggles, due to financial constraints, impedes their full participation in Jewish community life and in society generally. Each application will be reviewed with the utmost of respect for the confidentiality of the applicant. If you would like to inquire please contact JEWISH CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICE AT 477-7430. Community members are encouraged to convey this information to anyone who could benefit from this financial assistance.

Kol Yisrael areyvim zeh lazeh ……. all Jews are responsible for each other.

This approach to community living is very fundamental to Judaism. It emphasizes our communal duty to assume our share in looking out and caring for our fellowman.

There are many ways that you and your family may want to contribute to the well being of others. Tikkun Olam is the Jewish value of making the world a better place, and bringing a little bit of heaven down to Earth, by performing acts of loving kindness. We would appreciate your involvement in a number of projects that would benefit the clients we serve and help build a stronger community.

HOLIDAY OBSERVANCES
One of the greatest Jewish traditions is sharing holidays with those less fortunate. The holidays can be a particularly challenging time for the frail elderly, those who are new to our community and those experiencing a loss of self sufficiency.

PASSOVER ASSISTANCE
JCFS serves as the central organization for the distribution of Passover food hampers to needy families prior to Passover. A financial contribution to Mois Chitim will help a needy family celebrate the holiday. We appreciate the generosity of individuals who have donated generously to the Passover Assistance program over the years. As well, a social service club or synagogue congregation may want to consider organizing a fund raising project with proceeds directed towards the Passover Assistance program.

JOIN A FAMILY SEDER
If you have room at your family seder table let us know. Sometimes there are newly arrived immigrants or students studying away from home that do not have a seder to attend. Let us know if you have a place(s) at your table. Call the office at 477-7430.

CHANUKAH HAMPERS
Consider arranging for a Chanukah hamper for a needy family. We will provide your family or group with anonymous information about a particular family. You will be given the ages and interests of the children, particular dietary issues and other details to help you put together a suitable Chanukah hamper. It is a wonderful way to share the light of Chanukah. Call the office at least 3 weeks prior to Chanukah to let us know of your interest in preparing a Chanukah hamper.

PURIM SHALACH MONOT
It is a beautiful tradition to exchange gifts of Hamantashan, candies and other sweets during Purim. If you, your family or group are interested in providing shalach monot packages, let us know so that we can be sure that we have the mechanics for distributing them to those in need. Please call early so that we know of your intentions.

FOOD PANTRY
In our community food is plentiful. Most of us take for granted the widespread abundance of food in supermarkets and restaurants, never doubtful about finding the means of providing our families with regular well balanced meals. Some people are faced with skipping meals to pay bills or buy medicine. Others save leftovers of food that you would have thrown out so that they can have enough to eat the next day. Living with hunger for some people is a daily occurrence.

On an emergency basis, the JCFS food pantry is available to help alleviate the burden of hunger. We want to be able to have available food on the premises to distribute if the need should arise. We welcome contributions of nonperishable food to our pantry.

ACTING AS A GUARANTOR TO SOMEONE SEEKING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE THROUGH THE ASPER HELPING HAND INITIATIVE.
The Asper Helping Hand Initiative, an interest-free loan program, was designed to provide assistance to members of the Jewish community of Manitoba who are experiencing a temporary financial hardship. Interest-free loans, instead of charity, promote self-sufficiency with dignity and can assist those in need, helping them to lead more rewarding and responsible lives. You can help us by stepping forward as a guarantor for someone in need of a loan but who is unable to provide their own guarantor.

COMMEMORATING MILESTONES
In celebration of a special moment in your life or the life of a family member, it is a mitzvah to remember the needs of the less fortunate. There are many ways you can add a mitzvah moment to your simcha.

Instead of flowers consider using usable items as your centerpieces, which can be donated when the celebrations are over. In the past we have received nonperishable food items, knitted mitts and scarves, children’s toys and books, school supplies, Judaic ceremonial items to name a few examples. Find a creative way to decorate your tables that will have a lasting benefit to someone in need.

COVER OUR KIDS WITH CARE
With your generous support of this project, JCFS will be able to purchase the materials necessary to make beautiful, handmade quilts, and then gift a personalized quilt to every child in its foster care program. Funds also go to help support programming for Jewish foster children. You may choose to send out a tribute card with your donation. Contact JCFS at 477-7430 to support the Cover Our Kids with Care project.

JCFS TRIBUTE CARDS
A commemorative card from Jewish Child and Family Service is an ideal way to celebrate a special occasion, congratulate a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, welcome the birth of a new child, recognize an anniversary, show appreciation for those who have assisted you with your simcha, wish a speedy recovery, or honour the memory of a loved one. Upon receipt of your donation, a tribute card is immediately mailed out from the JCFS office to the person or family you are honouring with the name(s) of the donor and your special message. To send out a tribute card call the office at 477-7430.
